Transitioning into autumn

As it is well and truly feeling like autumn now I thought I’d share some simple things with you that I do for a smooth transition into the cooler months…

Layer up and get outside

Getting outside is a simple and easy way to enjoy autumn, and filling our lungs with fresh air has lots of health benefits. I like to wrap up warm and go for a walk to enjoy the crisp autumnal air, a guaranteed energy boost and a great remedy for the summer blues.

Also exposing your eyes to some natural daylight in the morning is a great way to regulate your internal body clock and production of melatonin which can also help you get a good night’s sleep.

Eat seasonal

It’s the time of year where we crave warmer foods and heartier meals. ‘Seasonal eating’ can promote well-being and help the body stay in equilibrium, in simpler times we were more connected to the patterns of nature. At this time of year Ayurveda suggests warm foods, healthy fats and grounding root veg, along with warming spices such as cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove. I have been enjoying more hearty meals, I’ve switched my morning tea for a comforting Masala Chai and first thing I drink a warm water with lemon and ginger to help detoxify and work with digestion.

Go easy on yourself

Remember, it’s natural to feel like we have less energy at this time of year, as the sun’s energy diminishes so does ours. It’s important to keep moving but I also try to allow myself time for rest when I need it, our bodies need time to adjust to the change in season. So don’t forget to give yourself a break, take time out when you need it, maybe that’s treating yourself to a soak in the bath before bed.

And finally (I think you saw this one coming), do yoga!

As well as enhancing the flow of prana (our vital energy), boosting mental clarity and strengthening our agni (digestive fire), yoga also increases the release of endorphins (happy hormones) making it a great way to start your day.

I find it harder to get motivated on darker mornings but if yoga isn’t already part of your routine, try adding just a ten minute practice to your morning. Maybe some days it’s just breath work or meditation but committing to doing some element of yoga is guaranteed to give you a mood boost and the head space you need to start your day.
